Change ahead for the Foundation for Water Research

Foundation Trustees today announce that they are seeking to transfer the Foundations assets to an organisation which can continue its mission to educate the public in science, engineering and management of water.

The Foundation for Water Research is a registered charity that was formed in 1989 and operates from Marlow, Buckinghamshire. The Foundation’s role has evolved over time and the organisation now specialises in producing and sharing documents and reports which translate the latest science and knowledge on the water environment, industry, and water and society into plain language for anyone to engage with. The Foundation has members and customers all over the world.

Recent events including the loss of key management staff and the rate of rundown of capital investments to support the current range of activities, necessitate change.

Dr Eric Valentine, Chair of the Foundation for Water Research said “The Trustees have been considering the future of FWR for some time. Sadly, our Chief Executive Officer, Caryll Stephen was forced to retire at the beginning of the year due to ill health. Caryll had steered the Foundation for over 30 years. We now need to look forward and ensure that the FWR mission can continue into the long-term.”

Dr Valentine has engaged the Foundation’s Members and convened an ‘Advisory Board’ which can oversee the selection of an organisation to receive the Foundation’s assets and continue its mission. The Trustees have appointed ALP Synergy Ltd, a business and sustainability consultancy, to support the organisation through this transition and then close down the Foundation for Water Research by the summer of 2022.

The Foundation for Water Research is an independent member-based company limited by Guarantee; not having any share capital. It is a registered charity and as such must abide by the rules and regulations of the Charity Commission. It is financed through investments funded through the sale of redundant water research assets. It was formed in 1989 and Its members represented all facets of the water industry and included water companies, consultants, government bodies.

The Foundation’s Mission is to advance the education of the public in the science, engineering and management of water environment, resources, water treatment, water supply and use of water, the collection, treatment and re-use of wastewaters, the water environment in general and related subjects.
