Pressures and Impacts

As required by Article 5 of the WFD, SEPA has produced detailed assessments of the pressures and impacts on the water environment in the Scotland River Basin District and (jointly with the Environment Agency) in the Solway Tweed River Basin District. The Environment Agency has undertaken a similar assessment for the Northumbria River Basin District.

The Scottish Office has issued a policy statement setting out principles for the objective setting process in the River Basin Management Plan which takes into account the pressures and impacts in Scotland. The document ‘Implementing the Water Environment and Water Services (Scotland) Act 2003: – Principles for Setting Objectives for the River Basin Management Plan’ (issued March 2007) can be found on the Scottish Government website:

In 2007, SEPA published a Significant Water Management Issues (SWMI) Report. Among other things, this sets out the results of work SEPA has been doing since 2004 to refine its initial risk assessments.

As a part of the river basin planning cycle each River Basin District was required to produce a Summary of SWMI. A 6-months’ public consultation on SWMI was closed on 8 April 2008. The consultation documents on SWMI in the Scotland river basin district and Solway Tweed river basin district are available on the SEPA website:

The draft River Basin Management Plans for the Scotland River Basin District and the Solway Tweed River Basin District include a section on pressures and risks in Annex 1. This is available on the SEPA website:
