ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS AUTHORS AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Dr John Murray-Bligh is the principal author of this book. John is an
acknowledged expert in biological monitoring and aquatic ecology and
is currently a national ecology advisor for the Environment Agency.
His main role is as a technical lead for river invertebrate assessment methods,
most of which he helps to develop for application in the UK with partners
across the UK and co-ordinated with UK WFD Technical Advisory Group.
John produces technical guidance for ecologists in the Environment Agency
Dr John Murray-Bligh and beyond, also producing training material and running workshops.
Beyond the Environment Agency, for the last 10 years, John has also worked
with European colleagues on projects to build environmental management
capacity in other countries, including Turkey, North Macedonia and Serbia.
John is a fellow of the FBA.
Dr Martin Griffiths is co-author of this book. He developed an earlier
Ecology and Biological Monitoring Handbook in 2012, with Reindeer
Torenbeek, as part of the EU knowledge exchange programme with
China. He was also co-author, with Chris Chubb, of the sister book to
this, Regulation for Water Quality, published by FWR in 2014.
Martin is an expert in water quality strategy, regulation and policy. He initially
trained as an aquatic biologist at London University. He was Head of Water
Dr Martin Griffiths Quality Policy in the Environment Agency and latterly Deputy Director of
Regulation in the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in
London. He is a Visiting Professor at Cranfield University and lectured on a
number of MSc programmes. He also works as an independent consultant
on water and environmental issues.
Dr Maxine Forshaw is principal editor of this book. She has worked
for the Water Research Centre (WRc), the Environment Agency and its
predecessor organisation. At the National Rivers Authority and the EA
she was an R&D Programme Co-ordinator.
Her background comprises freshwater aquatic biology and toxicology, and
she is now a copy-editor for environmental science-based publications.
She currently works at the Foundation for Water Research and is editor of
Dr Maxine Forshaw the FWR newsletter.
Rachel Roberts is the graphic designer of this book. She has taken the
readability and innovative design of the handbook to a new level.
Rachel is a professional graphic designer with 25 years experience across
many design fields. She is a keen nature lover and environmentalist. Her
business, Starfish Design – Llandudno, offers creative graphic design
services to businesses across the UK from her studio in North Wales.
