ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The Authors would like to acknowledge the following for help in the production of this handbook:
The European Union for co-funding the initial drafting and development of the predecessor book
Ecological and Biological Monitoring, European Water Framework Directive Guidance and Methods for China.

The EU China River Basin Management Programme for commissioning, project managing and
publishing the predecessor handbook in Chinese. Also, our Chinese colleagues in the Ministry of Water
Resources and the Ministry of Environmental Protection in China for their assistance and debate in the
scoping and development of the initial handbook.
The Environment Agency for England has allowed access to its wide-ranging public information,
guidance and operational instructions, in use now and in the past. Most of our contributors have either
worked for the Environment Agency, worked on contracts as experts, or are still employed by them.
All have given their time outside of working hours to contribute to this book. We hope that the book will
be useful to the Environment Agency and its partners as an overview of this important subject area.

Thanks to the Council of the Foundation for Water Research currently led by its Chair, Eric Valentine.
Thanks also to Caryll Stephen (Chief Executive, FWR – now retired) who recognised the potential for this
book to assist in water management at a global scale, and for making this publication widely available via the
organisation. Thanks are also due for underwriting the funding necessary for graphic design, e-publication,
and a limited number of hard copies.
Finally, to the Freshwater Biological Association to the current Executive Director, Simon Johnson,
for his recent support in completing the handbook and confirming our ongoing partnership with FBA.
Thanks also to Bill Brierley, previous Chief Executive of FBA, for his technical support and providing resource,
including employing Naomi Lumsden to undertake some preliminary technical work on Chapter 1 of the
publication. The enthusiasm and drive from Roger Sweeting (former Chief Executive of FBA) and
Anne Powell, in meetings in Ferry House, was much appreciated.

                   Photography

The authors and designers offer grateful thanks to the following for permission to use their photographs free
of charge in this not-for-profit publication:
Environment Agency Brand Bank and former EA colleagues: many photos were taken by EA biology
staff, current and past, including John Murray-Bligh and Judy England.

The Freshwater Biological Association photo-bank and accumulated photographs are used
throughout this publication. The photographers are too varied to mention and for many the source, and the
individuals in the photos are not recorded. Thanks to all.

Special thanks to John Davy-Bowker for his exceptional microscope photographs of invertebrates used
throughout the book. And thanks to Simon Blake, independent environmental consultant, and all others
                   who contributed.

The artistic skill and copyright of all is fully acknowledged. In this book, many of the photographs have
been used to encourage creative thinking and practical application, rather than to directly illustrate or
                   accompany the text.
